Female Suicide Bomber 

Kills 41 In Iraq


About 41 people have been killed while more than 100 others are wounded in a fresh suicide bomb attack in northern Baghdadad.


Most of the affected people were Shia pilgrims on their way to Karbala in central Iraq.

 

CNN says a woman who pretended to be a pilgrim detonated her explosives vest among the people.


The pilgrims were marking Arbaeen, the end of 40 days of mourning for the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson. 


The attack comes amid heightened tension between Sunni and Shia groups ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for March.




Sudan Prepares For First Election 

In 24 Years


A Sudan prepares for her first democratic presidential election in 24 years, the Co

untry’s electoral commission says it has endorsed ten presidential candidates for the April 11 polls..

The sitting President, Omar Hassan al-Bashir is contesting to return as the leader of the east African nation.

Already, major secret deals and strange political affiliations have been playing out playing out behind closed doors.

al-Bashir is seeking alliances with the three other leading parties in a desperate bid to legitimize himself.

The parties include the former southern rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the Umma Party of Sudan.

Support from any one of these parties would likely return Bashir to the presidential palace.

the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest for war crimes last year. 

The ICC is due to rule on February 3 on whether Bashir is also being charged with genocide in Darfur.




Fresh Violence In The Middle East


The City of Kashmir has erupted in a fresh violence following the alleged killing of a 15-year old boy by the police.


The boy was killed after being hit on the head by a tear gas shell fired by security personnel.


The BBC reports that protesters clashed with police in the town of Srinagar, throwing rocks and shouting anti-India slogans.


Crowds gathered at the home of the boy before his body was carried through the town in a funeral procession.



Plane Makes Emergency Landing 

In America


A small plane has made an emergency landing on a highway in the US state of New Jersey


Neither of the two people on board were injured in the incident on the New Jersey Turnpike, about five miles east of Philadelphia.


Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said the plane was believed to be involved in traffic reports for radio and TV stations.


He expected police to move the plane on to a truck for Evacuation.



African Migrant Killed 

In Israel


Israeli security operatives say an African migrant has been shot dead and another injured when they tried to illegally migrate to Israel from Egypt.

The injured migrant from Cameroon, was taken to a hospital, while the other died on the spot. His nationality was not known as he had no Identity papers on him.

REUTERS reports that in recent months Egyptian police have stepped up efforts to control the border with Israel, following an increase in human trafficking.

At least 19 migrants have now been killed at the border since last May.

Egyptian police say the smugglers who ferry migrants to the border region sometimes fire on security forces.


Afghan President To Negotiate 

With Taliban


Afghan President Hamid Karzai is planning to negotiate with Taliban fighters, if they renounce their violence.

Karzai who says he is ready to treat the rebels as everyday people rejects their demands that international troops BE withdrawN from Afghanistan.

The international community backed that plan at a conference in london last week where Karzai promised monetary incentives for the fighters.
